Grace Collection #4: DIY Elegant Ribbon Bow Hair Clip Tutorial
Share
This tutorial is part of our Grace Collection, a series dedicated to creating refined and charming hair accessories. Learn how to craft a beautiful ribbon bow that perfectly blends simplicity with lively elegance.
Materials You'll Need:
- 2 pieces of Gray Ribbon, 1 inch wide and 7 inches long (with three yellow stripes running vertically along their length)
- 1 piece of Black Ribbon, 0.3 inches wide and 6 inches long
- 1 Metal Alligator Clip
- 1 piece of Black Ribbon, 0.3 inches wide and 2.5 inches long (same material as the 6-inch black ribbon)
- Hot Glue Gun with Glue Sticks (preheat and keep ready)
- 1 roll of Elastic Cotton Thread
- 1 pair of Scissors
- 1 roll of Double-Sided Tape
Step-by-Step Tutorial:
Part 1: Crafting the Double-Arrow Ribbon Base
- Take one gray ribbon. Fold both ends towards the middle to find the center line. Apply double-sided tape along this center line. Then, secure both ends of the ribbon onto the double-sided tape.
- Take the other gray ribbon. First, secure both ends as in Step 1. Then, find its center line and mark the quarter-point lines.
- Take one end of this ribbon. Fold it to the left along the quarter-point line, ensuring the diagonal edge forms a 45-degree angle with the right edge of the ribbon.
- Next, fold the left-folded part downwards to the right, along the midline formed by the midpoint of the diagonal edge and the intersection points with the ribbon's sides. This action will create an arrow shape at the top of this ribbon section. For detailed instructions on this specific fold, please refer to our Grace Collection Part 1 tutorial. Secure the bottom half of this section to the double-sided tape on the center line.
- Repeat the same folding and securing process for the other end of the ribbon, attaching its bottom to the double-sided tape on the center line. You will now have a ribbon piece with a distinct double-arrow shape.
Part 2: Forming the Main Bow Body
- Take the double-arrow shaped ribbon piece. Excluding the arrow tips, fold it symmetrically twice horizontally from the middle.
- Wrap elastic cotton thread tightly around the center approximately 10 times, tie it securely, and trim the excess thread.
- Take the other gray ribbon piece (the one without arrows, prepared in Step 1). Excluding the ends, fold it symmetrically twice horizontally from the middle.
- Wrap elastic cotton thread tightly around the center approximately 10 times, tie it securely, and trim the excess thread.
Part 3: Assembling the Bow
- Apply hot glue to the bottom center (where the cotton thread is) of the non-arrow shaped ribbon. Attach it to the top center (where the cotton thread is) of the arrow-shaped ribbon, forming the main bow. Gently pinch the bow together until the hot glue cools and sets.
Part 4: Adding the "Antennae" Detail and Finishing
- Take the 6-inch long black ribbon. Fold both ends towards the middle to find the center line. Apply hot glue to this center line and secure both ends onto it.
- Apply hot glue to the bottom center of this black ribbon piece. Attach it to the top center of the non-arrow part of the gray bow.
- Take the 2.5-inch long black ribbon. Wrap it around the very center of the assembled bow. Apply hot glue to its ends where they meet at the back of the bow, and secure it.
- Apply hot glue to the top of the metal alligator clip. Attach the bottom center of the bow onto it, ensuring the bow largely covers the metal clip.
- If necessary, apply additional hot glue to other parts of the bow's bottom and attach them to the alligator clip for extra security.
Congratulations, your elegant ribbon bow is complete!
Design Philosophy:
This bow, with its subtle gray and black tones, embodies simple sophistication. However, the carefully placed black ribbon at the top, resembling a butterfly's antennae, is the true stroke of genius. It injects a vibrant liveliness into the design, making the entire bow feel animated. The symmetrical bow sides, like graceful butterfly wings, seem ready to flutter at any moment. This beautiful fusion of understated elegance and lively charm truly defines its graceful essence.
