Grace Collection #6: Three-Tone Angled Plaid Bow Hair Clip Tutorial
Share
Welcome back to the Grace Collection, where we explore the art of creating unique and elegant hair accessories. In this sixth installment, we delve into a design that embodies sophistication through simplicity. This tutorial will guide you through crafting a distinct three-tone plaid bow hair clip, featuring an ingenious angled design that makes it quietly remarkable.
Materials You'll Need:
- 1 piece of Dark Grey Plaid Ribbon with Yellow Stripes, 1 inch wide and 6 inches long
- 1 piece of Black Plaid Ribbon with White Stripes, 1 inch wide and 6 inches long
- 1 piece of Felt-like Grey Plaid Ribbon, 1 inch wide and 6 inches long
- 1 piece of Black Ribbon, 0.3 inches wide and 2 inches long
- 1 Alligator Clip
- 1 roll of Double-Sided Tape
- 1 roll of Elastic Cotton Thread
- 1 pair of Scissors
- Hot Glue Gun with Glue Sticks (preheat and keep ready)
Step-by-Step Tutorial:
- Take all three long ribbons (dark grey, black, and felt-like grey). For each ribbon, apply double-sided tape along its center line. Then, fold both ends towards the center and secure them onto the tape, fixing them in place.
- Layer the three ribbons: Place the dark grey ribbon at the bottom, the black ribbon in the middle, and the felt-like grey plaid ribbon on top. Arrange them so that each ribbon forms an approximate 20-degree angle with the one beneath it, creating a subtle fanned effect.
- Using the top grey plaid ribbon as a guide, carefully pinch the overlapping central section of all three layered ribbons horizontally to form two symmetrical folds. Hold them firmly.
- Wrap elastic cotton thread tightly around the exact center of the pinched ribbons approximately 15 times. Tie it securely and cut the excess thread. Then, carefully adjust the position of the three ribbons by hand to ensure they are symmetrical and form a well-defined three-color bow.
- Apply hot glue to a suitable spot on the top surface of the alligator clip, aiming to cover as much of the clip as possible with the bow. Securely attach the bottom of the prepared bow onto the glued area of the clip.
- Apply hot glue to the top of the bow, directly over the white cotton thread binding. Attach one end of the small 0.3-inch wide black ribbon onto this spot. Wrap this black ribbon around the center of the bow, covering the threads. Then, open the alligator clip, apply hot glue to both ends of the small black ribbon, and secure them to the backside of the alligator clip's top. During this process, use your fingers to carefully remove any excess hot glue for a clean finish.
And just like that, your unique three-tone angled plaid bow hair clip is ready to wear!
Design Philosophy:
This particular bow stands out for its deliberate simplicity and profound elegance. Devoid of extra embellishments like pearls or chiffon, it relies solely on the interplay of its three deep, classic tones: black, dark grey, and grey plaid. What truly elevates its design is the ingenious way these ribbons are angled and layered, creating a subtle yet dynamic three-color effect. It transforms what could be merely plain into something quietly sophisticated—an understated beauty that finds its distinction not in adornment, but in clever construction and harmonious composition. This piece proves that true elegance often resides in the refined art of the seemingly simple.
