Grace Collection #5: Elegant Plaid Bow Hair Clip Tutorial with Pearl Accent

This tutorial is part of our Grace Collection, a series dedicated to creating refined and charming hair accessories that blend classic elegance with a touch of modern flair. In this guide, you'll learn how to craft a chic plaid bow hair clip, beautifully accented with a single golden pearl.

Materials You'll Need:

  • 2 pieces of Black Plaid Ribbon, 1 inch wide and 7 inches long
  • 1 piece of Grey Felt-like Plaid Ribbon, 1.5 inches wide and 6.5 inches long
  • 1 piece of Black Ribbon, 0.3 inches wide and 2 inches long
  • 1 Metal Alligator Clip
  • 1 Imitation Pearl (Gold Plastic Bead)
  • Hot Glue Gun with Glue Sticks (preheat and keep ready)
  • 1 roll of Elastic Cotton Thread
  • 1 pair of Scissors
  • 1 roll of Double-Sided Tape

Step-by-Step Tutorial:

  1. Take both black plaid ribbons. Apply double-sided tape along the center line of each, then fold both ends towards the middle and secure them onto the tape, fixing the ends.
  2. Take the grey felt-like plaid ribbon. Apply double-sided tape along its center line, then fold both ends towards the middle and secure them onto the tape, fixing the ends.
  3. Take one of the black plaid ribbons. Gently pinch the ribbon horizontally in the middle to create two symmetrical folds. Wrap elastic cotton thread tightly around the center approximately 15 times, tie it securely, and trim the excess thread.
  4. Repeat the folding and securing process (Step 3) for the second black plaid ribbon.
  5. Take the grey felt-like plaid ribbon. Gently pinch it horizontally in the middle to create two symmetrical folds. Wrap elastic cotton thread tightly around the center approximately 15 times, tie it securely, and trim the excess thread.
  6. Apply hot glue to the side of the gathered center of one black plaid ribbon (where the cotton thread is). Press it firmly against the side of the gathered center of the second black plaid ribbon to form a butterfly wing-like shape. Hold until the glue cools and sets.
  7. Apply hot glue to the top of the gathered centers of the joined black ribbons. Carefully position and attach the grey plaid ribbon on top, ensuring the grey ribbon sits above the black ones. Pinch the glued area until the hot glue cools and sets.
  8. Apply hot glue to the top surface of the alligator clip (the side that faces upwards when worn). Carefully attach the bottom of the assembled bow (where the black ribbons are) onto the glued area of the clip.
  9. Take the 0.3-inch wide black ribbon. Apply hot glue to one end and attach it to the very top center of the bow. Then, flip the alligator clip over and open it slightly. Wrap the black ribbon around the center of the bow and the clip, threading the ends underneath the clip. Apply hot glue to the ends and secure them to the backside of the alligator clip, holding firmly until set.
  10. Apply hot glue to the flat bottom of the imitation pearl. Carefully attach it to the very center of the thin black ribbon you just wrapped around the bow.
