Grace Collection #8: DIY Elegant Dragonfly Ribbon Hair Clip Tutorial with Crystal Accents

Welcome to the latest addition to our Grace Collection! Today, we're thrilled to guide you through crafting a truly unique and elegant hair clip, inspired by the graceful flight of a dragonfly. This piece masterfully blends deep, sophisticated tones with the playful transparency of sheer ribbon, subtly highlighted by sparkling gold and crystal accents. The result is a simple yet striking accessory that brings a touch of lively elegance to any look.

Sheer Ribbon: One 1-inch wide x 5.5-inch long piece, and one 1-inch wide x 6-inch long piece.

Black Ribbon (Thin): One 0.3-inch wide x 8.5-inch long piece.

Grey Ribbon (Thin): One 0.3-inch wide x 4-inch long piece.

Black Ribbon (Short, same material as thin black): One 0.3-inch wide x 1.5-inch long piece.

Gold Imitation Pearl Plastic Bead: 1 piece.

Imitation Diamond Ornaments: 3 pieces.

Metal Alligator Hair Clip: 1 piece.

Hot Glue Gun & Glue Sticks (pre-heated).

Elastic Cotton Thread: 1 roll.

Double-Sided Tape: 1 roll.

Step-by-Step Tutorial:

Part 1: Crafting the Sheer Ribbon Bow

Take both sheer ribbon pieces (5.5-inch and 6-inch). Fold each ribbon in half to find its center line. Apply double-sided tape along this center line.

Fold both ends of each ribbon towards the center line, adhering them to the double-sided tape. This secures the ends and creates a loop.

Arrange the folded sheer ribbons, placing the shorter one (5.5-inch) on top of the longer one (6-inch).

Pinch the stacked sheer ribbons horizontally at their center to create three neat folds.

While holding the folds firmly, use elastic cotton thread to tightly bind the middle section (wrap about 15 times). Secure with a knot and trim the excess thread. Your sheer ribbon bow is now formed!

Part 2: Forming the Black Ribbon Dragonfly Body

Take the long black ribbon (0.3-inch wide x 8.5-inch long). At approximately 1/4 of its length from each end, cross the ribbon diagonally, forming an angle of about 120 degrees at the overlap. This creates the "wings" of our dragonfly.

Gently flatten the overlapped section with your fingers, adjusting to find the central point of the "knot."

Pinch the center of this ribbon "knot" and use elastic cotton thread to tightly bind it (wrap about 15 times). Secure with a knot and trim the excess thread.

Part 3: Attaching to the Alligator Clip

Take the grey ribbon (0.3-inch wide x 4-inch long). Apply hot glue to one end of this ribbon and attach it to the back of the upper part of the metal alligator clip.

Apply hot glue along the entire top surface of the metal alligator clip. Wrap the remaining part of the grey ribbon around the top, ensuring it covers the clip neatly. Secure the excess end to the back of the upper part of the clip with hot glue.

Part 4: Assembling the Hair Clip's Layers

Apply hot glue to the top center of your sheer ribbon bow (Part 1). Align the black ribbon "dragonfly body" (Part 2) with the sheer bow, ensuring the black ribbon's base is glued firmly onto the top of the sheer bow's center.

Take the short black ribbon (0.3-inch wide x 1.5-inch long). Wrap it around the center of the combined sheer and black ribbon bow, covering the elastic thread. Apply hot glue to both ends of this short ribbon and secure them to the bottom of the bow.

Apply hot glue to the bottom of this wrapped black ribbon. Align it with the metal alligator clip at a 90-degree angle, attaching it approximately 0.5 inches from the clip's top.

Part 5: Adding the Embellishments

Apply hot glue to the base of the gold imitation pearl bead. Attach it to the black ribbon knot, approximately 0.5 inches below the center of the main bow.

Apply hot glue to the base of each of the three imitation diamond ornaments. Attach them along the remaining empty space on the hair clip, below the pearl bead, ensuring they are evenly spaced.
