Cosy Collection #2: Four-Tone Mixed-Media Ribbon Rose Bow Hair Clip Tutorial

Hello again, fellow crafters, and welcome back to our Cosy Collection series! Today, we’re shifting our focus toward nature-inspired beauty with a design that is all about cozy charm. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to craft a lovely four-tone mixed-media ribbon rose bow hair clip. By combining soft chiffon leaves with a structured satin rose, this piece perfectly proves that you don't need complex designs to make an accessory look absolutely beautiful and comforting to wear.

Materials Needed:

Ribbons & Chiffon: (All continuous rolls, uncut)

1-inch wide green chiffon ribbon

0.5-inch wide wavy-edged (scalloped) chiffon ribbon

1-inch wide yellow satin ribbon

0.5-inch wide silver-gray satin ribbon

Hardware & Findings:

1 alligator hair clip

Tools:

Fabric scissors

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Elastic cotton thread & standard sewing thread

Lighter (for heat-sealing edges)

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Fold the Yellow Ribbon Rose
Take your 1-inch yellow ribbon. Fold the top right end diagonally down to the left so the top edge aligns perfectly with the left edge; secure with a dab of hot glue.
Next, fold the pointed tip straight down to meet the bottom corners and glue in place.
Then, fold the upper left corner diagonally down to the right so the corner aligns with the opposite edge, gluing it down. You now have a layered arrow/triangle shape.
Flip the working ribbon behind this arrow. Fold the ribbon to the left, then wrap it around to the right, fully enclosing the arrow core; secure the sides with hot glue. Repeat this process—folding the ribbon back and wrapping it around the center—to build up the rose petals. Once you reach your desired rose size, trim the ribbon, use your lighter to cleanly singe the outer edges, apply hot glue to secure the base, and cut away any excess fabric underneath.

Step 2: Create the Chiffon Leaves
Take your 1-inch green chiffon ribbon. Fold one end into a sharp, pointed leaf shape. Pinch the base firmly with your fingers and wrap it tightly with standard sewing thread to secure it. Trim the leaf from the continuous ribbon roll, and use your lighter to neatly burn away any loose thread ends and seal the edges.

Step 3: Make the Second Leaf
Repeat the exact same technique from the previous step to create a second matching green chiffon leaf.

Step 4: Form the Wavy Chiffon Bow
Take your 0.5-inch wavy-edged chiffon ribbon. Cross the ribbon over itself and pinch it in the middle to form a classic bow shape. Hold the center intersection firmly with your left hand, wrap the elastic cotton thread around it about 5 to 6 times to secure the gather, and snip the thread.

Step 5: Wrap the Bow Center
Take your 0.5-inch silver-gray satin ribbon. Measure and cut a small strip just long enough to wrap neatly around the center of the bow, completely covering the cotton thread. Secure the ends at the back with hot glue.

Step 6: Assemble the Leaves and Rose
Apply a dab of hot glue to the top-left section of the finished chiffon bow. Place the two green leaves on the glue in a crisscross pattern to secure them. Next, apply hot glue to the bottom of your yellow ribbon rose and press it firmly into the center of the bow, layering it beautifully on top of the leaves.

Step 7: Line the Alligator Clip
Apply a thin line of hot glue along the top surface of the alligator clip. Press your 0.5-inch silver-gray satin ribbon onto it to line the clip, and trim off any excess ribbon.

Step 8: Final Assembly
Apply a generous amount of hot glue to the back-center of your completed flower bow. Press it firmly onto the middle of the lined alligator clip, holding it in place until the glue sets completely.
